比德(约673—735)是中世纪早期英国最著名的历史学家、神学家及科学家,被称为“可敬的比德”。他利用了坎特伯雷大教堂的英吉利教会的文献,将以耶稣基督诞生之年为基准的年代纪作为体裁,撰写了这部编年史。该书以罗马天主教会在不列颠的布教为主要内容,记述自奥古斯丁受命来不列颠布教开始直到罗马天主教在各国相继取得胜利前后一百余年的历史,也涉及当时政治、经济、文化等方面的情况,比德因此书而被称为“英吉利历史之父”。
