| Formatted contents note | 小说讲诉了中国兵团副司令秦震在南下的列车上接到周恩来副主席的电报，要他打听地下工作者白洁的下落，这使他内心激动，白洁是他的女儿，是师长陈文洪的恋人。秦震立即与陈文洪和师政委梁曙光研究，决心粉碎白崇禧的“华中局部反攻计划”，解救白洁和群众。这时白崇禧正从广州飞抵武汉，布置炸毁火车头和许多要害部位。梁曙光的弟弟梁天柱和几位铁路工人，冒着危险把火车头开走。解放军也多处突破天险，正面向武汉进攻。梁天柱开了一辆机车把解放军送进武汉。陈文洪立即率部向监狱进发，结果白洁已被敌人提前绑架走了，狱中的难友诉说着她的英勇斗争事迹。接着他们又寻找梁曙光留在武汉的妈妈，一时也没有结果，听到邻居称颂着这位坚持斗争的梁妈妈。<br/><br/>战争在向南延伸，南方的炎天酷暑，蚊虫水蛭和大雨山洪，都给北方的战士带来很大困难。进军中梁曙光得到妈妈的线索，他带领部队突入湖荡，打垮湖匪解救了母亲。大军又由鄂西向湘西挺进，在武陵山脉的峻岭中与敌军遭遇，激战后北方的战士伤亡很大，敌人却狡猾逃跑了。在敌关押人的地方，见墙上有“白洁不死”四字，陈文洪请求让他再指挥作战，终于取得重大胜利，俘虏敌少将司令，但白洁却在冲出牢房时牺牲。当这消息传结秦震时，他正在北京参加开国大典，新中国像太阳在东方升起，白洁在阳光里微笑 |
